Herdís Hlíf
Herdill is a Reykjavík based visual artist born in 1999.
She has been studying art since 2015 and is currently studying for her BA in fine arts at the Icelandic University of the Arts (IUA).
Her work often revolves around sex, self image, dreams, complex feelings, death and femininity and the experiences of women. They also frequently reference art history, but always with a twist.
"Ever since I started creating art, even when I was a child, I have been interested in realistic, figurative art. This is just what comes to me, how my ideas are embodied. I have always found it incredibly fascinating to be able to take a two-dimensional surface with nothing on it, whether it is paper, canvas or something else, and create some tangible reality on the surface. I do not think it's necessarily about it being completely photo-realistic, it's fine by me that people see that it's a painting, but small details that give the painting life, such as a highlight on a fingernail, a fold on a stomach or a rosy cheek can give me goosebumps. Although many of my works are heavy in subject matter, there is a lot of playfulness behind the scenes because I find it indescribably fun and rewarding to paint."
